I'm looking for 3D models or *solid* outlines of various sizes and shapes of
structural steel and square and rectangular tube. Inch measurements preferred.

I've found some collections of outlines in DWG format but they're useless in
trueSpace because they aren't solid, the lines and curves are all separate and
on different layers so there's no way to extrude into 3D solids. trueSpace
understands DWG layers, but it doesn't seem to have the ability to actually do
anything with a DWG except for importing it to be looked at.

I want to make a 3D model of the big plasma table for figuring out some
elements of its design. Would save a ton of time if I could make a library of
steel primitives to work with.

Is there a way to take a multi-layer 2D DWG file and flatten it to a solid DXF,
and select what's to be "inside" and "outside" so that for example an outline
of a 4x4 tube with .25" thick wall becomes a 2D ring shape?

If all it does is convert it to 2 solid line shapes, trueSpace can connect them
with a new face then extrude to form a tube.
