Forums are ok.. but a mail list puts everything in front of you. You don't have to go looking for it. I have about 10 email addresses. An email address for each list - so the messages self sort into my inboxes. No need to go to a website, log in and look for messages.
I'm on some forums for other things and I get email notifications that I have a message in the forum. I find that rather redundant. The IRC is also old tech but the conversations move very fast..
