This method has been used, albeit with a servo valve instead of a servo motor. In fact, I think it might even be fairly common. I think a servovalve is going to outperform a servo motor and will be cheaper. Although if you use a linear scale the hunting will drive you crazy with a valve. Moog has gone into this business with their linear actuators.
