Yes, the only way to run LinuxCNC in realtime on 64-bit is with the 
Xenomai or RT-Preempt kernels and the unified-build branch.

If you're willing to go with 32-bit, then RTAI (for Linux  3.4.55, on 
Ubuntu 12.04) becomes an option, and both the 2.5 and the master branch 
will work.
