Use high quality, round, shielded cable with twisted pairs, and the shield connected to the connector housing at both ends. I did some searching but wasn't able to find a diagram showing which wire pairs should be twisted together for IEEE-1284. The obvious ones to pair are each of the 8 data lines with one ground line.
