Hi,
I downloaded the most recent liveCD iso (binary.hybrid.iso), and have the
following problem:

1) booting in "install mode", my new SATA hdd isn't recognized. dmesg shows a
few
"ata1.00 FAILED TO IDENTIFY (I/O ERROR. ERR_MASK=0X4) " errors, then the kernel
gives up.

1a) if I add "pci=nomsi" to the kernel line, the disk is found and I can
install to it.

2) attempting to boot from this fresh install, one of two things happen:
2a) I get a nice grub "hd0: out of disk" error and the grub rescue console
(doesn't help)
2b) I get the normal boot menu after a while (good); but no matter what I try
the boot process
never gets past the "loading initial ramdisk..." line. I tried adding
"pci=nomsi", tweaking the
BIOS power management settings (currently set to "all off" : no APM, no ACPI),
and some other
 esoteric techniques I won't mention

3) I tried the previous linuxcnc liveCD (ubuntu 10.04, etc) : hdd not
recognized.

What does work:
-exact same hardware: booting in live mode from that Wheezy liveCD (why does
this work ?)
-exact same hardware, with an other liveCD (2.6 kernel, not linuxcnc) :
everything works
-same HDD, same cable, on another computer : everything works
-old IDE HDD, Wheezy liveCD : everything works

System:
mobo: Asus A8V-X (circa 2006; evil VIA VT8251 southbridge)
CPU: single core AMD ahtlon 3500+; socket 939
hdd: new Seagate ST2000VN000; SATA

So, wtf ? What else is there to try ? I'm getting the sledge hammer out real
soon.

Any suggestions are appreciated...
Thanks
