Just replacing the bearings wouldn't cut it for me unless there are 
outside edge sealed replacements available.  IMO in something like that, 
the lower 1/2" of the bearing should be flooded by the oil level 
contained. The oil chosen shouldn't foam up when everything is in high 
gear as foam doesn't carry away heat like moving liquid.

Is there enough room to machine a socket on the outside face and install a 
seal that rides the shaft? I have seen some pretty narrow seals, around 
1/8" wide, 3/16" larger OD. Red elastomer coated, they seal both the shaft 
and the seals OD nicely too.
