another possibility with python:

for serial, the adaptor I use mostly  :

    work with my specific hardware @500kbauds, up to 10 devices on the 
bus, without troubles.

I have done already some hal module that make remote action from Gcode 
command, I may look back for an example if you want.

for serial communication, a good trick is to add a weak polarisation of 
the bus, like this http://saphum.com/content/rs485-line-polarization (I 
use 390 ohms), soldered on the back of adaptor.

I end up making my how board for USB/RS485, that include these resistor 
(no galvanic insulation yet, as I don't have trouble, this may comes 
latter!)
