I was just offered a Cincinnati Milacron vertical mill a couple of weeks ago. (Cavalier 2000, 1998 vintage)
84" X, 25"+ Y, 25"+ Z, 30hp spindle and 33,000 lbs. It has newer ball screws. The controls malfunctioned and are obsolete, the spindle Z axis landed on the tool changer swing bar and bent the tool changer swing bar shaft. A replacement shaft assembly is $12K. So they are buying a newer mill for about $150K and getting rid of the old mill. It will cost $3.5K+ to get the old Cincinnati Mill onto a semi trailer because they have boxed the machine into the plant (it may have to go through a wall). Another $2K to get it unloaded and located into a shop. The tool changer shaft still needs to be fixed along with whatever caused the Z to crash into the tool changer. And they would want some $$ for the scrap value of the machine itself (another $3K most likely). The machine requires about 800 sq ft just to locate the machine. A machine that heavy needs a substantial floor and a decent 480 volt 3 phase service. A used machine like that in decent running condition with old controls can be bought for around $30K. So I could potentially save about $10K if I purchase the machine and don't include my labor hours and repair the machine. But there is risk and overhead involved that which pretty much negates the 10K saved... And that is why it is likely headed for the scrap yard. Heavy machines, like 30K+ lb mills and lathes have a limited market simply because of their size. Machines 10K lbs and under are much more manageable and can have a decent resale value.
