The idea is to have a manually-operated sub-stage on the machine.
I think that all that is required is an encoder on the hand-operated
leadscrew, the output of which is added to the motor encoder
output.(in HAL)

Then, as you turn the handle the PID will turn the motor in the
opposite direction to keep the apparent position the same, tracking
the same point on the workpiece..

Of course the machine config needs to be larger than the physical
machine, so you lose soft-limits, so it has drawbacks.
