There is another way, too. The problem with mapping the gamepad to keystrokes is that not everything can be done by keystrokes. More of a concern is that if you map to keystrokes then you are relying on the GUI being responsive. (It has to be admitted that this is a problem just the same with keyboard and mouse). One advantage of a more complicated solution is that a gamepad with analogue joysticks can be used to give analogue jogging. (move is a bit and the machinemoves slowly, move it a lot and it moves quickly). The wiki page I linked to earlier shows how to do that, but it is an either/or thing I think.
