The biggest thing to avoid is a round column.  You lose your 
X-Y alignment every time you need to elevate the head.
I don't know if the "minimill" fits your working volume 
requirements, but at least it has a dovetail Z slide.

my retrofit of one.  I use my Bridgeport retrofit for "real" 
work, but occasionally use the minimill for actual 
machining.  I got the minimill to take to shows, but also 
use it as a test bed for oddball experiments.  It was my 
first machine to do rigid tapping on, for instance.

For off the shelf machines, I'm pretty sure Novakon, Tormach 
and Smithy can all deliver machines with LinuxCNC.
