To reduce the suspense, its working. Milliseconds response to turn it on, 
and about 2/3rds of a second to turn it off.  Thats more than good 
enough for the girls I go with. ;-)

But my other comment re achieving independent control from gcode still 
stands.  I do have independent control from mousing the axis check 
boxes, but in gcode, an M9 turns them both off.  Not an ideal thing IMO.  

I'll go read up on remapping & see if I can get my head around it.
