I'll stick with ones that don't need batteries. My favorite way to do inch/metric is a dual-needle mechanical dial caliper: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161659398735 I have two of them, one at work and one at home. Both about five years old and working fine. No batteries to die, no electronics to go on the fritz.
