I only really see two solutions, either use Ethernet to control the
CNC machine, or use a dedicated PC to control the CNC.

I prefer the second option, just put a Mini-ITX motherboard in the
same box as the motor drives and other electronics.

Alternatively, use a Beaglebone and Machinekit. They seem to have
settled on using a headless BeagleBone and interacting with that
remotely from another PC (your laptop, in your case).

Acually, here is the fourth of my two suggestions, if you must use USB
then you can use a Smoothstepper and Mach3. It works very well for
many people.
