A month or so ago I converted one desktop mill from mach3 to LinuxCNC for a customer. It was using some USB-based controller with mach3, I do not know, if that is the same smooth-stepper or maybe something else. What I did: 1) installed Mesa 5i25 card in PC case; 2) installed new SSD drive in PC case and unplugged the old one (this is my VIP customer - gave him a possibility to convert back by replugging 3 cables as it took quite some time to finetune the config - machine is used for jewelry-like stuff, so max precision of machine is required and he was picky about any imperfections); 3) reused the parport breakout board - part of the decision was laziness to rewire - in this case I just had to replug the LPT cable; 4) flashed 5i25 with firmware for G540; 5) adjusted hm2-stepper sample config for particular machine; So it was 2 new pieces of hardware, but you most definitely can reuse the harddrive. It seems that after proper tuning of machine parameters people are getting good results with built-in parport, but I wanted to stick with what I knew would work great and the 5i25 is not that expensive...
