I could confirm micro controller PWM units are by no surprise good stepper generators. Toggle times may be transferred by DMA which reduce CPU load at the same time as flanks are placed by the accuracy of the oscillator frequency. I can't imagine there is any point to do better and even this is probably way more than needed and maybe even an order of magnitude better than needed.
Usefulness of micro controller generation of stepper signals may be another story since there are plenty of other possibilities. They are however available cheap if needed.
