You can put it IN the inbox, but not in parallel so its all in one grand foop of a list, but you can do it by hand and its zero problems.
the diff is that if I create it by hand, t-bird goes out of it mind and never seems to fully regain its sanity. But I can do that to kmail, and it happily creates the index file for the new directory(s) without a burp in a 12 pack of new ones once its been restarted.
