Greetings everybody;

This Sheldon lathe came with an MT5 -> 5C adapter, but the drawtube is a
shop-made thing only half done that I'm putting the handwheel and a
spacer sleeve on to complete it. That MT5-5C adaptor, when seated in the
spindle, projects about 3/4", and has an outer, thicker edge reinforce
that lacks at least 1/2" from being fully seated against the nose of the
spindle. That for starters seems like excess stickout.

It is also 2.75" long, and this er40 adapter, which I assume is intended
to fit in the usual 5C socket, only has about 5/16" of threads sticking
out the back of the 5C adaptor. I've somewhat completed the drawbar
tube, and made a sleeve with cpvc plastic inserts in each end so that
once I have made a conical nose for one end of it so its well centered
in the rear of the spindle, and made or found a steel washer to protect
the 8x2 handwheel's plastic hub, should fit reasonably well.

But I don't have enough threads on the 5C->er40 adapter to feel
confortable snugging it up for real. The drawtube screws on, and gets
stopped by running into the back end of the MT5->5C adapter.

So the question is, is the er40 adaptors rear end too short, or is my
MT5->5C adapter bogus, holding it too far out? Effectively needing a
precision polish to let it sink deeper into the spindle nose, and the
internal 5C taper in its front face expanded at least 20 thou to allow
the adaptor to sit deeper, with more of the er40 adapters threads to
come into use.

What say the real machinists here?

Cheers, Gene Heskett
