Gregg; I would check with the vfd folks, but the one I have, and intend
to it use on this Sheldon lathe I just bought, has analog inputs for
both 10 and 5 volt range external pot controls. These inputs are quite
well filtered and will accept the PWM output as a an analog control
signal, so you'd only need the PWM and DIR outputs of the 5i25's PWMGEN
to control the vfd. I have tested it with the vfd I have, a 1.5 HP rated
single phase power source I got from a fleabay dealer. Works fine.

You will have to use one of the GPIO pins for the enable signal if your
vfd requires it, but thats not a problem as Jon's PWM-Servo amp also
needs it so when I tested it, all I had to do was connect the 4 wires
including the common ground. I normally use that to run the OEM 1HP in
my G0704.

This will not give you an accurate enough rpm feedback that the RS485
interface will to attempt rigid tapping, for that you will still need a
shaft encoder.

I have made and installed an optical encoder on the g0704. Other than
the limited room and lack of a precision surface to mount it on, once
installed & bolted down, its worked well for rigid tapping, I just did a
3/8"x24 hole in steel yesterday with it. Anybody that wants the code to
carve the wheel, yelp and I'll make sure its on my web site in the sig.
Carve it in .03125" thick brass from a sheet intended for a door
kickplate.

Cheers, Gene Heskett
