LinuxCNC's "master" branch, and versions of LinuxCNC after 2.7.xx, will not
work with Ubuntu Lucid. You will need a fresh install of a newer OS if you
want to experiment with compiling the LinuxCNC master branch, or when LinuxCNC
2.8 is released and you want to upgrade to it.

If you use the install image with Debian 7 and LinuxCNC 2.7 from our
website you can create a fresh installation which will also support
building and testing the LinuxCNC master branch. However, take care
when doing this, because it is a full, fresh operating system
installation, not an update. Personally I recommend using a fresh hard
drive for a fresh installation if possible, it reduces the chances of
lost data; in all cases you should be sure you have a correct and
complete backup of your working installation.
