Berg (now assimilated into Stock Drive Products/Sterling Instruments) used to have a whole line of tricky "belts" for these special cases. Generally, they were either one or two steel aircraft cables with molded-on teeth. They had a variety for different kinds of bends and applied loads. I use a flavor of them on my mill to couple the tachometers to the encoder shafts, although no bends out of the plane. When exposed to oil, they have a life of at least 10 years, but I have had some of them start to crumble the plastic.
