Greetings all; My new live center came in yesterday. With its help, I have the tailstock within 3 thou or so laterally. It turns dead true to itself. Unfortunately, the mt2 shank, when turned in the barrel, has about a 20 thou wobble, so its going to need a witness mark for anything like repeatability. It also off vertically, and I have rotated the shank in the barrel to minimize that, but it still several thou high at its best orientation. I have split the tailstock and removed any paint etc and wiped a thin film of grease on the mating faces so that I can tickle its adjustment bolts for a thou or less when measureing it for in-out errors.
I can aquawk and get another live center, but its usable as is since vertical offsets are nowhere near as important as any x axis errors. Those I can adjust out. I used it to make a 2nd cat head today since I had enough of that crooked pipe to do it again, but better. But have not drilled and tapped the 4 holes for the brass bolts, Dinner needed to be taken care of. I'd love to have that rotary table usable on the g0704 but that would be major surgery on the whole control setup since I used some of the 5i25 p3 pins for other functions, and I'm not sure how to basically start all over, but quite a bit of it would have to be re-wired. And there is not room in the driver box for anything like a 7i90 and a triplet of 7i42TA's, which I would use if I started all over by building or buying another box to hold the mesa stuffs. So I guess I am stuck drilling the holes on the hf micro-mill where all I have to do is bolt it down and plug it in. At least there I can turn it exactly 90 degrees per hole. Assuming I decide to switch to a 7i90 on that machine, but using the Dell's parport, are there any gotcha's/peculiarities that others have encountered for me to worry about? Thanks everybody.
