The usual problem with dynamic hardness testers is the mass of the specimen. A thin or poorly supported part will give a false low reading as the specimen can deflect from the impact.

Search for Detroit Hardness Tester, it uses a bouncing ball with a calibrated tube. You simply drop the ball in the tube and watch the height of the rebound.

Make one yourself with bearing balls and tubing if you have some accurate samples.
