But reading the docs no, you can't program the FPGA in Python. You load an overlay into the FPGA then there is an ARM abased Python library that lets you access the functions that the overlay enabled in the FPGA. This is basically an FPGA that comes with some useful FPGA programs so that you don't have to learn to write them This hardware could make a nice platform for MachineKit because Linux and the FPGA are on the same PCB That said Mesa is selling Sparten-6 boards for about $90 and while Mesa has some usable software you don't have to use it. the boards appear to be general purpose So a Pi3 and a Mesa FPGA would give you abut the same thing at about the same price.
