I haven't engaged the gearbox on my South Bend Heavy 10L in over 10 years.  My 
ELS does all the Z axis motion including metric/imperial threading and is 
especially handy for boring into a blind hole.  Yes, I still have to look at 
the X axis dial and if I want tapers then I engage the South Bend taper 
attachment.  

Backlash on that old lathe isn't an issue for Z since the cutting is always in 
one direction although there is a backlash parameter that can be set.  Backlash 
on cross slide is a bigger issue for parting off.
