As Andrew already replied there are different shanks available.

In the US most metric taps are made on a shank that is common to a close Imperial size. E.G. 5/16 - 8mm.

If you are lucky enough to live where the ISO rules the shanks are made to a standard. Check with your tap supplier or manufacturer.
