Never trust the two words "Windows" and "Server when they are together.
Hell, never trust the word "Windows" when it relates to software.

Hi Martin,
Good links.
The other issue I've been fighting for some time, and one reason for the Pi4 is
a backup server.
For now the Pi4 c/w Mesa7i92 and a couple of break out boards has been great
for on the bench testing for my CAN bus based power draw bar. Project also on
hold for now.
I'm using Windows Home Server (WHS) to back up the various computers but it
can't do my Wife's MAC nor the Linux systems on the next. What WHS has(had)
going for it was the complete reconstruction of the system after replacing a
hard drive. This includes all the special secret keys for licensed software.
Not an issue for Linux because no one wants to put the licensed software on it
anyway so a pure file by file backup works well for Linux.
With WHS, insert a CD into the PC with the new hard drive. It boots from that
and finds the server. You then select which PC and which back up date you want
restored. Hours later when it is done the system boots as if it was never
broken. Saved my bacon a few times and much cheaper timewise compared to
re-installing all sorts of software files etc and reconfiguring. At worst you
lose the day the system failed.
But WHS is no more. Not sure why. Anyway the size of the hard drive I have on
the workstation now I think keeps breaking it. An older laptop died last week
and I've not been able to reconstruct it.
Hence the idea of using an RPi4 with battery backup for clean shutdown, fan and
a 4 TB hard drive is appealing.
However the work involved in setting up such a server seems overwhelming. But
first a Pi4 must be able to talk to one or more large hard drives.

I didn't actually pull the trigger at 1 cent because I somehow? thought it
might not ever get here. I'm
sometimes amazed at what people get up to with RPIs:

Maybe you don't have to use USB after all?

Hi Martin,
Just got an email that mine has shipped but no tracking info just yet.
My 16mm reamer finally arrived so I can get back to the Harmonic Drive project
once I get the S100
computers off the table saw and all the boxes off the floor. Kind of a mess.
And then I was foolish enough to buy this bare board and order parts. The CF
holders also finally (ordered
in April) arrived. But I have to write the disk drivers for these and that's
turning out to be a bigger problem
than I originally thought it would be. When done the CF cards replace 8"
floppy disks for a Z80 based
computer. (Yes. 8" floppy that at single sided single density hold a whopping
243K bytes)

Hi John,
That gives me 99% off as a new user bonus, so I would have to pay them US$ 0.01
with free shipping
estimated delivery August 29th <lol>

Really don't want to pay amazon.ca $25 for that sort of cable since they likely
all come from the same
place.

This one is only $5 Cdn with free shipping and I can wait until August for it.

I'm going to guess it won't work with the small KingSpec 8GB that is marked on the board
"7PSATA-1"

[Emc-users] Pi4 SSD, MicroSD use Here are some recent experiences with flash
storage on a Pi4 as
adevelopment environment running LinuxCNC 2.8.2.A while back I posted in this
mailing list that using
an
SSD on the Pi4 isprohibitive because it causes latency issues. At the time, I
tested this ona heavily
used,
repurposed ssd. I later discovered that the SSD was failingdue to write wear.
This is likely what caused
the
latency issues in thefirst place. In the meantime I ran the Pi4 (2GB memory) as
a development
platform, running up to 3 instances of VS Code (1.5GB memory each) along with
Glade,browser, etc.
This
type of usage made short work of the Samsung EVO microSDcard. The card wear
issue first showed up
as
spurious latency violations. Abit later the entire system became maddeningly
slow and
unusable.Cloning
to
a fresh sd card solved the problem. In the process of making backups I also
cloned the system to an
SSD
(intel320 this time) and to my surprise, it ran with zero latency issues. I
willbe using SSDs from now on,
thank you. Some takeaways:1) large page files are bad news for cheap flash storage2)
"worn out"
storage
will cause latency issue on low latency systems3) latency tests on a low
latency system might be a way
to
detect flashwrite wear
issues.Thaddeus_______________________________________________Emc-
