I guess the next question is whether anyone posted to the list in that period?

I don't recall I did, I'm up to what little hair I have left in 3d printer problems. Although I did print a vacuum snoot for my go704 that also contains a prox switch to measure what its cutting. pix attached The image is upside down with the large end driven onto the spindle barrel of the g0704, and a 3 inch by 1/2 inch router bit extends out the top about a quarter inch. the side pipe get a hose from the swarf vacumm plugged in. The holes in the side pipe hold an 8mm prox switch. The yoke beside it has a 14" bearing ball pressed into the hole, the turned upside down an snapped over the pins sticking out of the side near the top in this pix. To use, move z up 20 mm, move y to the rear around 50mm, the yoke swings by gravity, so doing a G38.2 deep enough to trip the switch measures the radius of the work piece mounted between centers of the Aaxis. Figure on making a measurement about 15mm from each end, sutracting them to get a diff, and adding that diff to an offset used for Z, to automatically cancel any taper caused to the diff in center heights of the two ends of the shop made A axis. Start with that diff var at 0, and by 3 passes, the taper which might be a mm at start, ought to be less than wood can be accurately measured after 3 passes. Thee will be 6 or 8 passes, making a 2" square hard maple stick into a 2" round stick, ready for cutting the butress thread into it by moving it to a 6040 gantry mill with an added B axis. That mill has a 24k motor and a 1/16" rn tool with a 1/4" LOC, very fragile tool and making that tool do the initial rounding is a 2 day job, vs around 2 hours just for the thread. Turning 2 day job into 3 a day. More rpms from the mill would be handier than sliced bread. I've been tempted to order another empty head sled and fit it with a trim router in the barrel hole. But then I face the reality of the pita it would be to change it each time.

I have done it all on the 6040, but w/o a tool changer, that is a huge time sink. I maybe should get a pack of 3mm bits which would fit the ER collet holding the teeny bit and try that as it would speed up the rounding of the square stick by quite a few hours. That and rig a permanent TLO contact, but that would also require a ground contact to the tool. That 4 bearing 24k motor apparently has ceramic bearings as the ER is not grounded by the bearings. Another 3d printer project... And make a vac snoot for it, that rounding operation makes large qty's of face powder fine saw dust. Do I have time to do all that? $64 question at my age. My next bday will make 90 of them.

Take care & stay well Andy.
Cheers, Gene Heskett, CET.
