Poly-V’s should work well but being paranoid an index pulse would add 
confidence. 
Trust but verify. 

I have a multi-groove poly-V on my lathe. Spindle encoder is coming but so is 
Xmas. 
Opps! Multi and poly is a bit redundant. Such is life.
