What closed loop steppers are you using on your Sheldon? Marcus On 28 Sep 2026, at 11:56,
Thanks for asking.

[snip big wall of text]

Both motors on the sheldon are 3 phase nema-23's, driven by a 3 phase driver with toauto stickers on them. X is a 2nm, timing belted 2/1, hidden behind a replacement1/2" thick  panel that replaces the whole apron. The Z motor is a 3nm version sitting so it is belted to the Z screw by about a 1.5/1 ratio.  That was my first such setup.   Those drivers are only rated for 50 volts so the supplies are 42 volt.

A couple years later, Hanpose in China made 2 phase versions and sells them thru aliexpress. But they used higher voltage coil driver transistors in the 100 volt and up range,  so I put the shorter 1nm nema-23's in my 6040 gantry that I threw away all the electronics of and made my own, swapping the Z which couldn't lift the spindle at 10ips, same physical size but 1nm rated can toss the 4 bearing spindle motor up at 150+ ips.  Needing a rotary B axis on that machine I cobbled up a 5/1 right angle and a 3nm 2 phase closed loop.  Motor gets pretty warm but  with 72 volts, it can make 600+ revs.  I carve BIG hard maple screws.  No heat if the revs are slowed a bit.

Then I needed a rotary A axis on my G0704, so I made another copy of that & printed mounts to put it on the end of the 704 table, again with 72 volts on the driver.

I have motors, drivers, and PSU's to do some more motor swapping, but my kidneys have made me spend time (3 hours a session) in a dialysis chair 3x a week. I'll be 92 next week, so I'm not as fast as before. I am also a certified electronics technician.

One thing I failed to note is the step/dir inputs on the Hanpose driver are a special high speed opto-isolator.  As such and using a good controller board in a printer, the opto has a current limit of 15 milliamps. standard controllers use a 5 volt swing, enough to eventually blow that opto. So when using the Hanpose drivers, put a 150 ohm, 1/4 watt resistor in series with each of those 2 pins. Otherwise the Hanpose product is bullet-proof.
