I noted the same thing, but Emacs is better than we all imagined.

diff-context->unified is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `diff-mode'.
(diff-context->unified START END)

Convert context diffs to unified diffs.
START and END are either taken from the region (if a prefix arg is given) or
else cover the whole bufer.
