The Intergovernmental Meeting on Great Apes and first Council Meeting for the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP) will be held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, from 5-9 September 2005. Participants in the meeting will seek to provide a response to the serious situation of great apes species, all of which are at high risk of extinction, and to establish a systematic international approach that would enable or improve their conservation. GRASP’s immediate challenge is to lift the threat of extinction facing most populations of great apes, namely gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos (pygmy chimpanzees) and orangutans. Its mission is to work with range State Governments and partners to conserve viable populations of all species and subspecies of great apes in their natural habitats, and to make sure that, where great apes interact with people, their interactions are mutually positive and sustainable.

IISD Reporting Services will be providing daily web updates from this meeting at http://www.iisd.ca/sd/IGMkinshasa/ and will publish a summary report at the conclusion of the IGM and Council Meeting.

Although we will not be sending out daily e-mail reports to our lists, we will be uploading short updates and photos from the meeting to our website each day.
