Hi Nils,

When did you first notice this problem? Has it been happening over
time, or was there a particular version/build of encfs that you were
using when you had problems? Or perhaps a particular version of
OpenSSL? You may be able to narrow it down by looking at the date
stamps of the files that have problems.

If these all came from some particular build, then I would try to
reproduce that build if you can. For example, if you found that these
problems all occurred when using encfs 1.5 on distribution X, then I
would try decoding the files on that distribution (for example by
installing the distro into a virtual machine if necessary).

Another way to get something like this (although I'd expect the
problem to be deeper in the FS hierarchy) is by killing encfs during a
directory rename. The "IV chaining mode" option means that a filename
encoding depends on the parent directory name. So a directory rename
is recursive and may result in the rename of many files. Encfs will
automatically undo the rename if a failure occurs, but if it is
interrupted, then you would have to manually undo by renaming the
directory back to the previous name in order for the filenames to be
decoded.

hope that helps,
Valient
