Dear Christina, I am a teacher/researcher at the local university in Tijuana, Baja California (Mexico). I finished my Ph.D. at the University of London last year, which focused on the meaning of work in women's ability to overcome violence in their lives. I interviewed 53 lower-class women in a majorly migrant community in Ciudad Juarez.
I could provide sections of my study if you find it relevant. I also wanted to point out the need for further examination of the killings of women in Ciudad Juarez over the past 7 years. This case has been widely covered by the media, but the focus remains on issues that, rather than dealing with the problem, end up covering it. By this I mean that, in my view, the killings have more to do with structural issues than with vandalism or presumed 'serial killers'. The structural issues that should be examined include the widespread misogyny in an isolated region, as well as patriarchal notions on masculinity and femininity parallel to the recent socio-economic changes affecting the area. In Ciudad Juarez (Chihuahua) you should contact Colegio de la Frontera Norte, whose director is Dra. Consuelo Tabuenca. Her e.mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I work at Universidad Autonoma de Baja California and will keep this e.mail number, even though I might be moving to Guadalajara in about three months. I hope this information is helpful.
