Dear End-Violence Members,

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) would like to
cordially invite you to attend the following events we are organizing
during the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, Spain:

* Official Satellite Meeting on The Care Economy, HIV/AIDS, and the
World of Work (Jointly organized by the International Labour
Organization and the United Nations Development Fund for Women)
WHEN: Sunday, July 7, 2002 from 5:00 7:00 pm
WHERE: Room 5:6, Palacio 5, Level 3, Fira de Barcelona Conference
Center.

The ILO and UNIFEM have launched a collaborative programme in the
follow-up to the UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS that
addresses the gender dimensions of the social and economic impact of
HIV/AIDS in the world of work. Its aim is to raise awareness about the
care economy, (which is understood as the unpaid household tasks and
social provisioning which is generally performed by women) and to
alleviate the burden of care for women and men workers in the context of
HIV/AIDS with the long-term aim of achieving the goals of decent work
and gender equality.

The Meeting will be Chaired by Noerine Kaleeba, Founder of TASO, Uganda,
and currently UNAIDS Programme Development and Community Mobilization
Adviser; and Moderated by Stephanie Urdang, UNIFEM Senior Advisor on
Gender and HIV/AIDS. Speakers include: Madhu Bala Nath, UNIFEM
Regional Gender Adviser HIV/AIDS in Asia & Pacific; Nalini Burn,
Technical Expert on Gender and Economics; Lin Lean Lim, Director, ILO
Gender Promotion Programme; Bolelwa Fako-Falten, AIDS educator in
Taiwanese garment factory in Lesotho, and an AIDS activist; and Cindy
Berman, Coordinator, ILO/UNIFEM Programme on The Care Economy, HIV/AIDS and
the World of Work.

* Skills Building Workshop entitled "Gender, HIV/AIDS and Safe Sex: How
to Empower Women in Self-esteem and Negotiation Skills
WHEN: Wednesday, July 10, 2:00 5:00 p.m.
Facilitator: Madhu Bala Nath, UNIFEM Regional Advisor for Gender and
HIV/AIDS, Asia and the Pacific
Co-facilitator: Mona Lisa Mishra, UNIFEM Consultant

Today there is enough empirical and anecdotal evidence to support the
assumption that the central issue that needs to be grappled with in
efforts to prevent the spread of the epidemic in women is that of
disempowerment. The empowerment process must challenge all oppressive
structures, thus creating possibilities for women to reclaim liberty,
dignity and self-esteem.

This participatory workshop is aimed at providing a training space to
understand the gender construction of sexuality, to learn how to talk
about sex and sexuality, and how to negotiate safe sex. Participants
will enhance understanding and skills in how to empower women to
negotiate safe sex, and to identify key entry points to integrate
components on self-esteem development, assertiveness and negotiation in
their work.

* Poster Session on UNIFEM-sponsored Community Based Research in
Senegal entitled "Myths and Sexual Practices: A Gender Approach to the
Analysis of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Senegal."
Presented by: Charlotte Faty N'daiye, Society for Women and AIDS in
Africa
WHEN: Tuesday, July 9, 2002 12:00 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Palacio 4, Fira de Barcelona Conference Center

This session will present findings from Community Based Research
conducted in Senegal sponsored by UNIFEM. The main objectives of the
research were to identify socio-cultural factors related to sexuality
and sexual practices among urban and rural populations in order to
analyze the contribution of these practices in increasing the spread of
the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially among women.

Other events UNIFEM is involved in:

* Satellite Session on Gender and HIV/AIDS: Bringing Women and Men
Together
WHEN: Sunday July 7, 2:00 4:00 p.m.
WHERE: 2A Fira de Barcelona

UNIFEM's Regional Advisor for Gender and HIV/AIDS for Asia and the
Pacific who developed UNIFEM's Training Manual on Gender, Human Rights,
and HIV/AIDS is participating in this Satellite Session being organized
by the Atlantic Center of Excellence for Women's Health (ACEWH) from
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and their partners. The Session will focus
on gender-based health policy and HIV/AIDS. Discussions from this
interactive session will help to inform the design of curriculum modules
for a proposed International Institute on Gender Mainstreaming and
HIV/AIDS. The proposed Institute will serve to increase the capacity of
programme managers and policy makers to incorporate gender-based
perspectives into their HIV/AIDS work.

* Pre-Conference On-line Discussion for the Women @ Barcelona Satellite
Meeting

UNIFEM, Health & Development Networks (HDN), and International AIDS
Society's Women's Caucus are collaborating on a special e-mail
discussion on women and HIV/AIDS using the Gender-AIDS forum. Using the
Gender-AIDS electronic forum, approximately 2000 members have been
expressing their views and sharing their experiences on issues related
to women and HIV/AIDS with a focus on research and treatment; advocacy
and policy; and the care economy. These issues are also on the agenda at
the Conference in Barcelona and, in particular, the Women At Barcelona
pre-conference satellite on July 7, 2002. Information compiled will
also strengthen the declaration, which will be an important part of the
Women at Barcelona and beyond. To join the discussion on-line, send an
email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* UNIFEM Exhibition Booth at the UN Village
WHEN: Sunday 1:00 7:00 p.m., Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m.
WHERE: Fira de Barcelona (Hall 2)

UNIFEM will have a booth within the UNAIDS stand at the UN Village.
This will be where you will have the opportunity to learn about UNIFEM's
work on gender, human rights, and HIV/AIDS; meet with UNIFEM staff and
network with others interested in gender and HIV/AIDS; and access
UNIFEM's HIV/AIDS publications. UNIFEM will be distributing two new
publications: "Empower Women, Halt HIV/AIDS" which highlights key UNGASS
targets and what they mean for women as well as actions that must be
taken to reach the targets. The second publication, "Act now: A
Resource Guide for Young Women on HIV/AIDS" is a joint collaboration
with the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) and
provides highlights of an on-line discussion on young women and
HIV/AIDS, useful information for those who want to start campaigns and
raise awareness on issues affecting young women.
