It only goes in one direction. My bank writes to me all the time, but I never write back. This rules out any approach that uses an exchange of messages to establish mutual trust. An obvious kludge would be some way for the bank to send you their key out of band, analogous to the notes on websites now that say please add our address [email protected] to your address book.
