I definitely like the idea of injecting some fun into the brand, and I agree that allowing user groups to play with and remix the brand to make it their own (and to localise it) would be really nice indeed. If he wanted to, > that is... :) My current thinking on the visual identity is to create resources so that people can be creative with this style of art work. We can provide a set of images, and people can create their own that get added. Keeping them in a similar style and with a common colour scheme will help to make them recognisable as "GNOME", while still allowing playfulness and creativity. It just needs a bit of work from a visual designer to get it finished.
