I definitely like the idea of injecting some fun into the brand, and I
agree that allowing user groups to play with and remix the brand to
make it their own (and to localise it) would be really nice indeed. To
me, fun and informality are an important part of what GNOME is, and I
think we should be communicating it more strongly.

My current thinking on the visual identity is to create resources so
that people can be creative with this style of art work. We can
provide a set of images, and people can create their own that get
added. Keeping them in a similar style and with a common colour scheme
will help to make them recognisable as "GNOME", while still allowing
playfulness and creativity. It just needs a bit of work from a visual
designer to get it finished.
