a tab can have 2 icons the way you're doing it? can they? i suposse the tab text color can't be changed in the new implementation or there shouldn't be these problems... my thoughts: if they can have 2 icons but no formatted text: it would be nicer if the unsaved changes remain untouched (with that icon 5px it should be easy enough) and other icon at the end of the tab with both the tab number and the actual status of the file (drawing the icon contents real-time is not that hard as far as i remember, i can be wrong though) if they can have 2 icons with formatted text (no background or no bold-italic also): same as before, but the last icon can have only the tab number and, e.g., the read-only properties if they cannot have 2 icons but can have formatted text: in the 1st icon put the red triangle and in the bottom, the tab number (though not in black, better grayish or it would be a "too crowded" appereance), then with color and/or italic-bold, the rest of status as they are now if they cannot have 2 icons and cannot have formatted text: the most difficult, i can't think in any good way to use those 5px to show all the possible combinations, if the status were exclusive between them (a main file cant be autorefresh, a hex file cant be readonly, etc) there could be simply a letter right under the unsaved status (blue H for hex, ? R for read only, gray M for main...), still, it cant show the tab number (great feature to have it dropped off) perhaps the best in this case is a dinamic width for the icon, or simply wider with the same margin in the right (to have the name simmetrically centered), i dont know... i would like better the 3rd one, it seems the best of them for me well i hope at least this will give you ideas or some inspiration -- PSPad freeware editor http://www.pspad.com
