I have this same issue. I am working on an XML project that uses PHP scripts to generate static XML pages. So when the PHP script echos the header for XML, the ?> tag gets associated with the <?php opening tag instead of the closer <?xml tag. Which then messes up syntax highlighting for the rest of the file. Of course there are no issues with the code and it works fine.
