I have (as many do) multiple e-mail addresses. I use Iceape
(SeaMonkey) with a number of these (mostly personal) addresses.
I uses Icedove (Thunderbird) with a number of (mostly business
oriented) addresses.

Until recently Debian had an Enigmail package which provided
functionality for both mail clients.

So far, so hunky dory.

Debian have moved to a different model of following upstream packages
- - instead of back-porting fixes into a previous release they're
essentially mirroring what happens upstream.

A new release of Icedove broke Enigmail, and Debian have decided that
the best way to "fix" this is to ship a version of Enigmail tailored
to Icedove. This version of Enigmail conflicts with the previously
installed version and causes it's removal. This leaves Iceape users
with a choice :

1. Don't upgrade, continue to use a vulnerable Icedove but have
Enigmail for both mail clients.

2. Upgrade, use the fixed Icedove but have no Enigmail functionality
for Iceape.

At the moment I'm following option 1, as the vulnerabilities are
mostly found in the html rendering & scripting functionality of Icedove.
Html rendering & scripting are for web-pages, not e-mail - if you want
to show me a web-page, send me a link.

I'm not here to moan (well, maybe a little bit), but to find a solution.
Iceape/Seamonkey users have been the poor cousins ever since
Firefox/Thunderbird were hived off into separate projects and have
been "left behind" before - I'm sure it will happen again.

Should there be an Iceape Enigmail and an Icedove Enigmail? Is it
possible to synchronise Enigmail to keep in sync with upstream projects?
What resources would be required to ensure that users of both mail
clients don't get dropped like this again?
