while you may certainly do so, to remove the cert is not necessary. I use both
S/MIME and OpenPGP for the same account/identity - but avoid using them at the
same time (mis them for one message).

You must just understand that "Options-Encryption" is an S/MIME setting and
"Engimail-Message will (not) be encrypted" is an OpenPGP setting. Personally I
prefer to use the buttonbar buttons anyway - I placed them next to each other
and select from them what I want to.

Sure, that's how public-key-cryptography works. Nothing Enigmail or Thunderbird
could do about it.

I can't. Can you please tra to describe the exact conditions/settings and steps
you took/which menu entries you select/which dialogs that appear to reproduce?
