Reproduced with Enigmail 1.8a1pre (2014-10-03) and Thunderbird 33.0b1. 1. account setting for nntp: only checking "Sign messages by default", not checking "Encrypt messages by default". 2. compose message for nntp. Enigmail button says "Use Defaults and Rules for Encryption" (so, message should not be encrypted). 3. try to send 4. cannot send message and error message (same as Matthew) is shown. 5. After changing encryption setting of compose window from "Use Defaults and Rules for Encryption" to "Force Not to Encrypt", message can be sent without encrypted.
