<puts on official Enigmail hat>

Although we're happy GnuPG has released version 2.1, new users should
continue to use 2.0 for the time being. Enigmail 1.7.2 was released on
August 29, 2014, prior to GnuPG 2.1's release, and has not been
thoroughly tested with GnuPG 2.1.

<takes off hat>

We've known 2.1 + Enigmail 1.7.2 introduces blank lines into encrypted
emails since November 6, 2014, when someone (okay, me) posted to
GnuPG-Users about GnuPG 2.1.0:

    "[T]his is a really shaky build, Werner. I'm getting all different
    kinds of weird errors, from the keyserver helper not being able to
    communicate with the outside world, to GnuPG swearing it's created
    output but no output file being created (!!), to GnuPG 2.1.0 +
    Enigmail inserting additional newlines after every line of text,
    to GnuPG 2.1.0 + Enigmail telling me it's successfully decrypted a
    message but presenting me with a blank screen, to... Some of this
    is probably on Enigmail; some of it is probably on [the Windows
    build of GnuPG 2.1]."

We later discovered GnuPG changed how it was delivering us output, and
as a result we were putting in newlines where they were no longer
needed. This had the result of adding blank lines.

My understanding is this has been fixed in the Enigmail nightlies, and
Enigmail 1.8 will (when released) not have this bug. :)

Also, 2.1.0 was a very shaky build but bugs are *quickly* getting
hammered out. 2.1.2 is significantly better. But were I a new user, I
wouldn't use 2.1 until at least 2.1.3.

> Is Enigmail geared to collaborate with specific versions of GnuPG?

Yes: released ones.  :)

> Which ones?

Enigmail 1.7.2 was designed to work with anything in the 1.4.12+ or
2.0.x series. Enigmail 1.8 will add 2.1 support.
