I went through most of those procedures where appropriate, disabling the gnome keyring etc. but to no avail. It's possible I was not doing everything correctly - most of it was strange to me. However, without changing anything else at all, I installed Claws Mail, told it to use agent in the settings, and it worked perfectly- so the obvious answer is to use Claws mail - certainly for anything encrypted, so that is what I will do. Thanks for the help, anyway.
