I went through most of those procedures where appropriate, disabling the
gnome keyring etc. but to no avail. It's possible I was not doing
everything correctly  - most of it was strange to me. However, without
changing anything else at all, I installed Claws Mail, told it to use
agent in the settings, and it worked perfectly- so the obvious answer is
to use Claws mail - certainly for anything encrypted, so that is what I
will do. Thanks for the help, anyway.
