There is automatic behaviour, scanning mails in the background, done by Thunderbird processes. This triggers Enigmail decryption. You usually solve this kind of trouble by adding a passphrase caching time. Enigmail -> Preferences, "Basic" tab, "Remember passphrase for x minutes of idle time."
