That's great to know, thanks for the info.  In the heat of
experimentation I didn't bother to look up "autocrypt".  Maybe that is a
good idea, cuz the uptake on PGP has been rather thin.

Wow it took me a while to figure out what you meant by the Autocrypt
"Tab", because Thunderbird shows those tabs as just plain text.  I
finally scanned the preference page line-by-line and saw this text:

  Message Composition Autocrypt

Turns out "Message Composition" and "Autocrypt" are separate clickable
tabs, not just text.  Well I'll be dog.

Anyway yes that does work, I can uncheck Enable Autocrypt and sure
enough it disables it.  But now that you've explained to me what a
wonderful and promising feature this is, with the prospect of bringing
secure email to the masses, I think I'll leave it enabled.  Thanks Florian.
