Attempt to fix the make install problem with recent gettext/auto* versions.
Shuffled around some startup/debug stuff.
Experimental RandR support configuration and code fragments.
Bypass some obscure command preprocessing stuff (echo).
Change some ALERT macro stuff to function calls.
