This will need to be removed.  The GNU readline library is GPL, not
LGPL.  And according to the generally-accepted interpretation of the
GPL, non-GPL software (like E) cannot even link to GPL'd libraries.

If E links with libreadline, E must be GPL'd.  But it's not.

Unfortunately, the GNU folks realized how useful libreadline was and
decided to use it as a propaganda tool to force other programs wanting
to use it to become GPL.  And it worked; a number of programs (like
mutt) that are currently GPL'd went that direction solely to link with
libreadline.
