i think that some of them are quite stable enough so that they do not
require a debuging option anymore.

for me too, it was just a remark ;) Not a "bug". I was just pointing
out that the size of the libraries is far beyond what it should be, that's
all. 

I am trying to install the libraries on a mandrake 9.2, and it is not
really straightforward...

well, another remark : in the epsilon's configure.in, why not use
AC_PATH_GENERIC, instead of AC_CHECK_HEADER (when one tests if epeg is
available) ?
